In the composition, " The summertime Day”, by simply Mary Oliver, there are many illustrations poetic devices that are very efficient and help to boost the thematic theme of the poem. A few that I identified to be particularly effective will be the examples of metaphors, repetition and irony.
The most interesting poetic unit found in the poem was the use of prolonged metaphor. It is evident in line three to ten:
Who built the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean –
the one whom flung herself out of the lawn,
the one who will be eating sweets out of my hand,
who may be moving her jaws backwards and forwards instead of down and up - who may be gazing about with her enormous and complicated eyes. Now your woman lifts her pale forearms and extensively washes her face. Right now she photos her wings open, and floats apart.
This expanded metaphor ultimately proves how a simple, brief life may also be a beautiful existence. The grasshopper is being in comparison to a human's life. Although it lives such a basic life, ingesting sugar out of your poets palm, moving her jaw forward and backward, she still lives an attractive enough life to be able to breeze her wings open and float apart peacefully. This is an example of a long metaphor because this metaphor can be developed over a number of lines as opposed to merely one. The composition also appears to be written from a Buddhist point of view, which is reflected through these lines. The Buddhists believe that existence should be guaranteed stress-free, which is exactly how these types of lines see how the grasshopper lives existence. These lines are also phrased in a way that is incredibly carefree and fun. This is certainly a similar rendering to a common summer day time. The concept of the the poem is also that life is treasured, and like the grasshopper, we should enjoy each day, enjoy the sunlight in the summer, get pleasure from strolling throughout the fields, and live life to its fullest..
